Summary:

However, after speaking with him, Sergei learns that Lushkoff used to be a clerk but turned to begging due to his alcoholism. Lushkoff also admits that he has no real work skills, and his situation has worsened because of his drinking habits.

Sergei decides to help Lushkoff, but instead of giving him money, he offers him work. He hires him to chop wood in his house and promises him a regular wage. Lushkoff initially refuses, but Sergei convinces him to take the job. Despite Lushkoff's reluctance, Sergei continues to provide him with work, hoping that he might help him get back on his feet.

Over time, Lushkoff’s attitude changes. He becomes more honest and hardworking, and Sergei begins to notice a positive transformation in him. As Lushkoff becomes sober and starts taking his work seriously, his life begins to improve. He is no longer a beggar and begins to regain his self-respect and dignity.

Years later, Sergei meets Lushkoff again, and Lushkoff reveals that he has completely turned his life around. He is no longer begging and is now earning an honest living. Lushkoff thanks Sergei for giving him the opportunity to work and change his life.
